What Sade Sati is

Sade Sati (साढ़े साती) is the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period during which Shani (Saturn) transits three signs — the one before your moon sign, your moon sign itself, and the one after it. Because Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, the full passage lasts about seven and a half years, which is what the name 'sade sati' (seven and a half) refers to. It is traditionally regarded not as a curse but as a demanding period of hard work, discipline and karmic lessons.

The period is divided into three phases. In the rising phase Saturn is in the twelfth sign from your Moon; in the peak phase it moves over your Moon sign itself, which is usually felt most strongly; and in the setting phase it occupies the second sign from your Moon before finally moving on. Separately, when Saturn transits the fourth or eighth sign from your Moon, it causes a shorter two-and-a-half-year 'Dhaiya', or small panoti (Kantaka Shani and Ashtama Shani respectively).

How to use this calculator

Select your moon sign — your janma rashi, the sign the Moon occupied when you were born — from the list. The calculator reads Saturn's current sidereal position and tells you whether Sade Sati or a Dhaiya is running for you today, which phase you are in, and the approximate start and end dates of the period. If no Sade Sati is active, it shows when your next one is expected to begin.

Because Saturn periodically turns retrograde near the boundary between two signs, dates within a few weeks of a sign change are approximate. Use the result as guidance for planning and reflection. Remedies traditionally associated with Shani include disciplined routines, service to others and prayers on Saturdays; for a personalised picture, generate a full Kundli, which places Saturn precisely in your birth chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sade Sati?

Sade Sati is the approximately seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn (Shani) transits the three signs around your natal moon sign — the twelfth, the moon sign itself, and the second. It is considered a testing time of effort, discipline and growth rather than simple misfortune.

How do I know my moon sign?

Your moon sign, or janma rashi, is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment of your birth. It is not the same as your sun sign. If you don't know it, generate a free Kundli with your birth date, time and place to find it, then return here.

What is the difference between Sade Sati and Dhaiya?

Sade Sati lasts about seven and a half years while Saturn crosses the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon. Dhaiya (or small panoti) is a shorter period of about two and a half years when Saturn transits the 4th sign (Kantaka Shani) or the 8th sign (Ashtama Shani) from your Moon.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. Traditionally Sade Sati is a period of hard work, responsibility and maturing rather than guaranteed hardship. Its effects vary with your full birth chart and Saturn's strength in it, and many people achieve lasting growth through the discipline it demands.
